Flight of Form, Nicolai Bejder, Pre Order, Release 09.12.2025
An Investigation into Systemic Performance and Entropic Geometry
The Flight of Form is an experimental art project exploring how structure and chance collide. Using a vintage German geometry play set (Spiel Matema Formenspiel Schroedel Nr. 63003), 67 plastic shapes are launched one by one from the position of a camera lens onto a sheet of paper. Each piece is added without removing the previous, resulting in an evolving field of overlaps, collisions, and visual noise. Every stage is documented through photography, capturing the transformation from order to chaos.
The process is bound by a strict set of rules—fixed distance, fixed launch point—but the outcomes are entirely unpredictable. Gravity and material behaviour take over where artistic intention steps back. The artist becomes a facilitator of a system rather than its controller.
The project echoes the serial logic of Max Bill and Josef Albers, but reframes their controlled aesthetics in a post-conceptual, performative setting where precision and unpredictability coexist. It also draws from the legacy of conceptual and generative artists such as Sol LeWitt, John Cage, Vera Molnár, and Hans Haacke, positioning itself within a field where systems, chance, and form are in constant negotiation.
The result is a visual publication that documents the full sequence of throws—each page a new iteration, a new deviation. The Flight of Form is not about finding form, but about watching it emerge when the rules are clear and the outcome is not.
